Horror Sedap to be Indonesia’s Representative at the 2023 Oscars

The Oscar Selection Committee for Indonesia 2022 chose the film  to represent Indonesia at the prestigious international film competition, the 95th Oscar Cup. This film will represent Indonesia for the International Feature Film Award category.

Horror Sedap is a comedy-drama film written and directed by Bene Dion Rajagukguk. The film, which successfully earned 2.8 million viewers, stars Arswendy Beningswara Nasution, Tika Panggabean, Boris Bokir Manullang, Gita Bhebhita Butar-butar, Lolox, and Indra Jegel as the main character.

This film tells the story of a Batak family with four children. Each child is told to have their own problems related to their parents. Three of the four children who migrated were determined not to want to go home because of problems with their parents. Their parents devised a plan by saying that they would divorce so that their children would return home from overseas.

The film Horror Sedap is the second Indonesian film with a comedy genre to be chosen to represent Indonesia at the Oscars after the 1987 film Nagabonar . The 95th Oscar will be held on March 12, 2023.

This year’s Oscar Selection Committee consists of nine members, consisting of film figures, journalists, and film critics. This committee is chaired by renowned filmmaker Deddy Mizwar, secretary to Zairin Zain and members: Armantono, Cesa David Luckmansyah, Garin Nugroho, Ilham Bintang, Niniek L Karim, Slamet Rahardjo, and Yadi Sugandi.

To determine which films will participate in the Oscars, the committee will show selected films specifically at Studio XXI Plaza Senayan from Monday morning to evening, 12 September 2022. The selection session was then followed by a discussion by the jury members. After discussion, the jury members finally unanimously decided to choose the film Horror Sedap as Indonesia’s representative at the Oscars.

“This is the maximum that the Indonesian Oscar Selection Committee has produced. For the rest, let’s pray together, hopefully next year this film can win at the Oscars,” said Deddy Mizwar when closing the meeting on Monday, September 12 yesterday.
